1. An introduction to Owen College

Owen College is an adult English language training college in Yang Shuo, a town around one hour’s dive away from Guilin. It has been established for over ten years, and has always had a good reputation for high quality teaching. Owen College attracts students from all over China, and always has a strong contingent of foreign teachers and volunteers. The college has its own apartments and dormitories for teachers, volunteers and students, and caters for both couples and individuals of all ages and cultures.

2. Why teachers work at Owen College

Owen College is a fantastic place to work; it is like one big family. The Chinese staff is very supportive towards foreign teachers, dealing with all kinds of problems from helping to find teaching material, to searching for the best deals on plane tickets and tours. As all students live on campus, the teachers really get to know their pupils and so are easily able to cater their lessons to suit their students’ personalities, interests and abilities. The workload is reasonable, and everyone goes out of their way to make you feel comfortable. The close proximity of Owen College to West Street also means that a Western bar is only a 5 minute bike ride away, so you never feel too far away from home.

3. Teaching methodology and teaching materials

Owen College follows the Cambridge New Interchange course, which is divided into four levels. The teacher is expected to base their teaching on this course, but is also encouraged to supplement this with their own material. As a rough guide, the teacher spends half their time teaching from the book, and the other half teaching other material. There is good Internet access at Owen College as well as a well stocked library from which the teacher can find what they need.

4. Academic support

Owen College has its very own teacher trainer, Betts, who is a Canadian professor. Betts is always there to help out with any problems a foreign teacher may have, be it a teaching difficulty, or problems in adapting to the Chinese way of life. She is particularly experienced in teaching Chinese students, having already taught in China for several years, and gives excellent guidance on constructing lesson plans, particularly for those teachers who have never taught before.

5. Teacher development

A teacher is given training by Betts upon arrival, and after that is given continual guidance by the other more experienced teachers and of course by Bobby and Betts. By the end of a month, even the most inexperienced of teachers become confident instructors.

6. What is Owen College looking for in a teacher

Owen College expects a teacher to be fun, outgoing and willing to try new things. Although the college would prefer it if a teacher has had some teaching experience, the actual ability of an individual to hold the students’ attention and give energetic and effective classes is more important. Owen College teachers are expected to be sensitive to the Chinese way of teaching and learning which is a little different from the Western way, and respond quickly to feedback from students and colleagues.

7. What students expect from a teacher at Owen College

Students want enthusiastic and fun teachers, who present a variety of material – particularly about Western life and culture. The students are also looking for teachers willing to interact with them outside of lesson time, and who want to learn about their lives and Chinese culture. Very often, students and teachers go on outings together, which not only helps to improve the students’ communication, but also makes it easier for the foreign teacher to get around China. Students in China are used to reciting and memorizing, so it is always exciting when a foreign teacher is willing to play games and use more interactive ways of learning.

8. Class organization, level and age

The Owen College students are divided into four different levels, with ability ranging from beginner to advanced. Each class has no more than 8 adult students of all different backgrounds. Many students are already highly successful people in their own right.

9. Workload and schedule

The Owen college day starts at 9am. and ends at 4.30pm with a 2hr 30mins lunch break, during which Chinese people are accustomed to take a midday siesta. Each teacher is usually not expected to teach more than 15hours a week (half day), with the addition of two English corners (2hours each) a week. This leaves plenty of time to plan lessons and tour Yang Shuo during your spare time, which of course includes weekends.
