School outing to Longsheng
| Early Saturday morning we the staff and students of Owen Language College were off on our adventure to Longsheng, to see for ourselves the beauty of the Rice Terraces.! D( O# D3 E2 ]+ `! d) m The 200 km bus ride from Yangshuo took us a little over 4 hours. Once we arrived near our destination, we were greeted by many local Yao minority women. The Yao women are known for their very long hair. A few of us got to witness one of the Yao women washing her long, floor length hair in the river. As we started hiking up the mountain, many of the locals were eager to carry our bags for a price. We all said no, we can do it, but an hour later, and only half way to our destination, some of us gratefully accepted the help of the locals. I saw a 70 year old woman carrying a heavy basket on her back filled with tourist’s luggage. 5 t* h8 P9 A. w( g 6 G0 N- n9 p/ m- |2 B The scenery was amazing as we wound our way up the mountain and though little communities. We saw horses, dogs and a few chickens along the up hill path. Two men were carrying a washing machine up to one of the hotels. I wondered if this is how they received all their supplies. Sounds like a lot of work to me. When we arrived at our gorgeous, large wooden hotel, the owners had green tea and beer waiting for us. The local Yao women were also waiting for us, with their blankets, bracelets and other souvenirs ready to sell, sell, sell. One look in their direction and you were bombarded with their chatter to buy, and merchandise thrust at you. The sheer expanse of the terraces from the hotel was overwhelming. Occasionally we would look up and realize that we were also surrounded by beautiful mountain peaks, but the terraces were mesmerizing.) J3 d$ p5 ~. t. O Our hosts prepared an appetizing, meal for us, consisting of 11 spicy, tasty dishes and a soup. We all enjoyed the meal and the company of each other. 4 b" R" a( J; u After supper we played games, listened to music and visited with each other. Later in the evening our hosts brought out a barbeque, and we barbeque chickens and drank beer. It was a fun filled evening, A few people in our groups got up early to see the sun come up, as the first light touched the rice terraces, cameras were ready to shoot, the awesome beauty of the country side.2 n3 x+ n! x# ?' @* ]! A few of us in the group went to Ping’an by bus. At 1:30pm we all met for a another great meal in Ping’an at the Yuelianwan restaurant.. After lunch we had about an hour to shop in the colorful markets that lined the streets on our way to the buses that took us back to Yangshuo. A great week end was had by all. |
